Linux can't find my pci video card duriing auto probing.

The problem first started when I couldn't get xwindows to work (even
in monochrome or VGA).  I really looked hard for the source of the
problem and found that during the auto probing of pci devices linux
couldn't find my video card.  The exact statement was:

Probing pci hardware
Error : Unknown pci device.  - please read  /include/linux/pci.h

Well I looked at the file and it didn't really tell me anything.  I
had my video card in there (which is an ATI mach 64) in the statement:

define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ATI_M64 0x??some number??

How can I tell Linux that I have this video card.  My friend has the
exact same video card but his finds it fine.  X windows on his system
is awesome.  I helped him set it up so my xf86config is almost
identical to his except for the monitor refresh rates.  Someboby
please tell me why this is happening.  I will be very grateful.
