Problem with US Robotics Sportster Voice 33.6

Hello!

I have a problem with my USR Sportster Voice 33.6. I bought it some month
ago for my Linux box to transfer news and e-mail with uucp. My computer is
a 486 DX2/66 with 16 MB RAM and two 16550 UART controller.
When I try to connect to my UUCP site (uucico -S <system>) then the modems
exchange their carrier signals and the following problems appear:

Sometimes the modem hangs up. (in the moment when the connect message
should come)
Sometimes the modem connects but there is no data-transfer
Sometimes it works!

I tried everything to solve the problem (changed the complete hardware
too), used other initstrings.... and another modem:
the us robotics sportster 28.8  !!!!!!!!!!! it worked! there was no
problem.

So I sent my 33.6 Modem to the US Robotics Support. The told me, that the
modem is ok!

Please help me!

If there are any other users with the same problems please e-mail me.

yours,
martin

The USR sportster modems are of dubious quality (I had all kinds of
problems until I replaced it with a USR Courier - which works better
than any modem I have used).  Try two things: one, run uucico -x all
-s yourSystem and see if the /var/spool/uucp/Debug file helps.
Otherwise, setup a chat script to dial into your uucp feed as though
you are dialing in as a shell user and run chat and pppd in full debug
mode and see where you modem is having trouble.

If these do not help, call you UUCP feed (if it is a commercial you
are paying for) and ask for help - those guys have seen it all, in
terms of modem problems, and perhaps they can help.  Good Luck!

I heared of this problem. I have a usr sportster VOICE 33.6, too and I know at
least two others, which all works fine. It's right, the "vi"-versions had some
problems (mine ran hot), but all "VOICE" I know, are ok.
Try to limit the maximum speed to 28.800! There is a command, you should
find it in the manual.

hope this helps, Weisi.

One thing funny about at least some of the USR Sportsters is that the
factory default setting that you get with AT&F gives you a _non-locked_
baud rate.  This means that the baud rate between your modem and the
computer changes according to the speed at which the modems connect
to each other.  The manual denies this, however.  Try an initialization
string like "AT&F&B1".

1. Help: Internal US Robotics Sportster Winmodem 33.6

Hello,

I am running Linux - kernel version 2.0.3 (SuSE 5.0, June 1997) - and want
to use my
internal US Robotics Sportster Winmodem 33.6 (I have no manual for it).

Examining the settings under Win95 I get the following:

 - COM2
 - Interrupt 3
 - Adress $110
 - UART NS 16550AN

Under Linux I have a link '/dev/modem' to '/dev/ttyS1'. I tried to dialout
using MINICOM
and TERMITE, but TERMITE says it is unable to open the device. MINICOM
'initializes' the
modem but does not dial (no error messages).

I already asked someone: The modem uses Windows GDI functions. But using
HYPERTERM under
Win95 I can type AT Hayes commands.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

        J. Melchert
