Someone mentioned the video controller is built into this motherboard.
Is this true? Does it work well under Linux? If not can I install a nice
video card without any conflicts? Anything else I may have problems
with?

I have once of these motherboards with an AMD K6-300 in it and it's running
SuSE 5.2. I use this box for a gateway/firewall system for my home network so
it's running 24/7.

I couldn't get the onboard SiS video to do better than 640*480 under
X, but otherwise it worked with both RH 4.2 and RH 5.1.

Can you disable the onboard SiS video and use a video card? Is there a
better motherboard in a similar price range I should be looking at?

That PC is not my main work machine, so I didn't invest more time
trying to get a better display, but I just added a cheap 1Meg S3
Trio64 video card, and it worked as is w/out disabling the onboard SiS
in the BIOS, so it seems like all it'd take is to get a new video
extension card (S3, ATI, Matroix have the most drivers under Linux.)

There is a jumper on the motherboard that disables the the onboard
video. With the onboard video disabled, you can install your own video
card. It's in the booklet that's included with the motherboard.

The board shares video memory with the system board memory.  If you can disable the
on-board video, I think I'll consider getting this board.  Frankly, I don't think
sharing system memory with the video card is a good idea, but then again, I'm no
motherboard architect to know the difference...

1. video driver for ASUS SP97-V motherboard?

I am somewhat new to Linux and have just installed Red Hat 7.0 on an
older machine of mine at home.  I am planning to buy a new 19" monitor
for this machine and wanted to make sure that the built in video
capabilities of this motherboard will be alright.  To check this I
hooked up a 17" NEC and ran Xconfigurator to set up this monitor and
to set the resolution to 1024x768.  This set up the XF86Config file
correctly but there is one problem, when moving and resizing windows
the movement and resizing is very choppy and slow.  Also, the
repainting of the screen is very slow.  My question is, do I need to
download and set up a new video driver (XFree4)for Linux, and if so
which one?  Can someone please guide me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Erik
