Adaptec 1542 + IBM DPES 31080 + Kernel 1.2.11 Problem

Adaptec 1542 + IBM DPES 31080 + Kernel 1.2.11 Problem

Post by Bernd Brinkma » Thu, 03 Aug 1995 04:00:00

I have got a new IBM DPES 31080 (1,08 G) SCSI harddisk and
I can't get it work.
After copying a lot of files from my old harddrive to the new one
the system suddenly hangs completely.
After a reset the system only gets to the SCSI-controller message
and then stops.
I have to turn it of to reboot the system.
In addition to the new harddrive I upgraded my mainboard to an
Asus P55TP4XE with 16 MB of RAM and 256 K cache and a P90.
There are no PCI-component running at the moment, I am using
an Adaptec 1542C (not 1542CF I think!).
Also I upgraded to kernel version 1.2.11 (with PCI support
included, but I found out that it isn't necessary).
I also tried a real old kernel (0.99p15) but it is the same.
The only difference to my other harddisks (Conner, Quantum, Seagate)
is that the IBM harddisk has 1034 (>1023) cylinders.
this problem occurs not only when copying lots of file
(but then allways) but also when I restore from tape
or even when I type 'ls' (I'm not sure about that).
There are no problems under DOS.
Other components: Diamond Stealth 24 VRam and SoundBlaster
Can anyone help my?
Thanks
Bernd

Have you tried turning on "BIOS translation for drives > 1Gig" in the
adaptec BIOS?  Do that, then re-lowlevel the drive.  It should work fine
after that.

1. Adaptec 1515 with IBM DPES 31080

I've just bought a new IBM DPES 31080 (SCSI) 1GB harddisk,
which I connected to my Adaptec 1515 Controller.
I booted from my old IDE drives and used the
"afdisk" utility, which was supplied with the controller,
to partition the new disk. I installed DOS 6.0 on the first
two partitions of the disk and everything worked
fine until I tried to install linux on the last three
partitions (one of them for swapping).
I used linux fdisk to change the  partiontions to linux format,
and loaded the data from my old harddisk.
Unfortunately fdisk -v reports several errors
(e.g. overlaying sectors and problems with the disk
geometry) and when I tried to install lilo it
reported problems as well. After adding "linear" to the
lilo.conf lilo finally worked, but it is very slow,
when it starts linux.
When I tried to partition the disk using the linux fdisk,
everthing is fine for linux, only that DOS then reports
problems when it tries to format its own partions (which
I set to MSDOS format under linux fdisk) and cant find its own
second partition.

So: whatever way I try, either DOS or Linux seem to have some
trouble with the partitions on my harddisk.

Does anyone know these problems? Is it the controller or linux
or DOS?
