4 port pci serial card recommendation

Post by brya » Wed, 19 May 1999 04:00:00

I have experience only with isa cards (the cyclades ones, in
particular).  if you have some spare isa slots, I have some 8-port
rs232 cards that I could unload.

its almost a shame to waste a 'valuable' pci slot for something as
mundane as low-speed serial.

: I am in need of more serial ports.  What is a good, cheap, pci based
: 4 port serial card that works with the 2.2.x series of kernels.

: Thanks,

4 port pci serial card recommendation

Hi Brian:

I have to go along with Bryan on this point.

RocketPort PCI Quad/DB25 4 ports with RS-232 fan-out cables;
DB25 male  95860-4 $445

I use an old BOCA IOAT66 six port ISA card that appears to
function nicely in Linux kernel 2.0.36 with a little
hand-holding from some nice folks on the Linux newsgroups. I
bought that at auction at eBay for $30 including 4
cable-sets (4 modem and 4 terminal).

By the way, what is your application?

And Bryan, what do you want for the 8-port?

Best regards Brian & Bryan,

Brian - not kidding

Yikes, way more than I wan't to spend. Time to look at other
options.

That is more like it. Sounds like you got a great deal.

Well, I just got a PalmIIIx and need another serial port for it.

I currently have an internal isa 56k modem(ttyS3), isa sb16, and
isa ne2000 10base2 clone.  And on my two on board serial ports I
have a second pointing device(my main is a ps2 mouse) on ttyS0
and a UPS on ttyS1.  I could probably find a cheap 10base2 pci
card.  I really only need one more serial port.

Well, just for the record, ByteRunner sells a 4 port serial PCI card
for less than $100.  I think that it's around $70.  Look at
www.byterunner.com.  I've got a 4S+2P (ISA) that I've been running for
several years and works great.  Note that the byterunner cards allow irq
sharing on the serial ports and it work very well.  They're well made, fast and
quite inexpensive.

Best
