L2 cache? on Pentium 3

L2 cache? on Pentium 3

Post by Scott Priga » Sat, 11 Nov 2000 04:00:00

I've just noticed that various things indicate missing/not found for my
L2 cache on p3 450?!
The system doesn't seem to be taking a hit, though?
Any ideas as to how to know for sure if I have a processor problem? ..
any good diagnostic etc

I've tried:
KDE info on processor in RH 6.2
DOS-based Dr Hardware 6.5e
Win-base Dr Hardware 1.5...

BIOS has everything enabled.

Thanks

Scott

I dunno.  There's an ancient cache checking program, probably available on
simtel...  {goes to look...*it{

try searching through:

What things are those?

What does `cat /proc/cpuinfo' say?

You would definitely notice decreased performance.

I believe Intel still lets you use their CPU testing tools, but I
don't remember where to find them.  You'll need a DOS boot disk for
those, I think.

???? if  'cat /proc/cpuinfo'  shows cache size 512k, your L2
is enabled

The system doesn't seem to be taking a

'memtest86' lets you toggle L2 on/off which effects memory speed
(look in upper left corner).  Should be in the 115 to 120 mb/sec
range with L2 enabled.  You might also try different L2 latencies if
your bios lets you change.  I run my p3-450 (oc'd to 608) at L2 = 3
instead of the default L2 = 8.

With L2 disabled a p3-600 will perform about the same as a 386sx.
My 450-SL35D will take my motherboard's highest fsb and run reliably at
698mhz, but only with L2 off.  What a dog ;0

! My guess is that the cache NEVER worked !!! It was just so much faster than
what I'd had before, ...  I didn't find it until I added some RAM and went to
test that.

cat /proc/cpuinfo >>   cache size:  0 KB   !!!

I also found a some Intel utils that confirm at
http://support.intel.com/support/processors/tools/frequencyid/downloa...

Now to see if I can get a new CPU from my vendor!

Thanks all!

UPDATE --

The day I took the box to vendor, I found a BIOS patch!  (MSI-6163pro)!

Case closed.  If this helps anyone else.

1. Pentium 120 MHz+512K cache, or 133+256K cache??

I wish to buy a Pentium PC to run Linux and Win95.

I see with Dell, for about the same money, I can get either a 120 MHz
cpu with 512K pipeline burst cache, or a 133 MHz cpu with 256K
pipeline burst cache.  Any ideas on which would be faster overall?
