dear linux-smp list and comp.os.linux.hardware,

I've looked over the faq and scoured newsgroups but I can't find anything
quite exactly like what I am experienceing. So if what I describe below
is old hat, then mabe someone should put it in the FAQ.

I've got an ASUS P2B-DS motherboard which untill recently had been runing
on a single processor. I'd originally installed RH 5.2 and successfully
made the transition to the 2.2 kernels. This machine has a US robotics
56 k internal modem (ISA), and a soundblaster 64 awe (ISA) and the onboard
scsi card has been connected at various times to CDR and scanners. I'd
implemented sound with the OSS drivers ( i really did want duplex ) and
finally everything was stable.

So, what is a good nerd to do with a stable system except add something.
With prices relatively low I shelled out the clams for that second PII 350
that I'd been planning to get for some time. Taking apropriate precautions
against static I nervously installed the new chip (well housing really they
make it so easy now a-days that it's hardly worth even milli-geek points).
On starting the system the bios complains that the new processor has some
instructions it doesn't know. So I upgraded the bios (for those interested
it is now 1008) and turned on the MPS 1.4 support. I boot into the old
kernel
and everything is fine, but of course only one processor is working. So I
download the most recent kernel patches from 2.2.5 to 2.2.9 from
kernelnotes
and apply them to my source tree. Then I make mrproper, make xconfig, make
dep,
make bzImage, make modules, make modules_install and install the new kernel
and rerun lilo. I configur the kernel with SMP and the Real timer support
that it asks for in the SMP help, all of the other options I leave alone:
SCSI, sound, networking, etc.

When I boot into the new kernel OSS complains and fails to load (no biggie,
i
sort of expected that) but far more troublesome dip no longer runs. Trying
to
diagnose the system I kill the dip job and try to talk to the modem with
minicom. I get no response whatsoever on any of the tty or cua devices.
What happened to my modem?

Booting back into the older (2.2.5) kernel the sound and modem work fine.

Ok so I figure perhaps it is something about the 2.2.9, so I compiled a
2.2.9 kernel without SMP (keeping the modules separate). With the non-SMP
kernel the modem works just great (OSS still complains, but that is again
no biggie).

It appears that SMP modifies the IRQ layout slightly but I can't find any
mention in any documentation about how to work hardware around the change.

So my guess is that my problem is one of either an IRQ or some similar
conflict
that is not getting flaged and is either so straightforward or so subtle
that
it isn't mentioned in any of the documentation. Am I right? Anyone have
any suggestions or pointers towards documentation that might guide me
throught this. I would really like to use my system SMP but dial-up
networking is absolutely essential.

in the belief that too much information is only marginally sufficient
i've booted back into the stable 2.2.5 kernel, the 2.2.9 no SMP kernel, and
the bothersome 2.2.9 SMP kernel and gathered all the info that looked
like it might help you all see what might be conflicting.

PLEASE HELP!

1. Best NIC card -- LInux 2.4 SMP -> LInux 2.4 SMP

Folks,

We have some nice Dell servers that are dual Pentium III's and
10,000 RPM scsi 160 disks running the new RedHat 7.2 (kernel 2.4.9...),
but we feel a bit "guilty" about using $15 Netgear FA310TX ethernet
cards in them.

Saw some PC type reviews and they liked the FA310TX -- we aren't
interested
in encryption/remote management/....   just TCP performance.
