trident 9440?

Post by Loo » Thu, 20 Jul 1995 04:00:00

greetings

our news server has been real flakey of late so we may have missed some
discussion....

but have just installed linux on a 486 with probably a trident 9440
graphics card.... (X -probeonly comes up with type byte 'e3') and it is
really a no go for X... which is a real downer...

the machine is owned by the uni so putting another card in is not an
option.

svgalib doesn't treat the card as anything but a stock vga card, so we
get no clues there either

if anyone could help or tell me off for bringing up an already dead
topic i would be extremely grateful.

mailing to me as well as posting would make me even happier as our news
will quite possibly fall flat on its face once more....

thanks

james

I'd love to find a solution to this too - I've been looking around for a
few days and haven't found the 9440 mentioned in any of the HOWTOs or
other docs I've gotten from tsx-11.

:(

If anyone can help - I'd appreciate it a *lot*

Right now I *can* get 320x240 mode - you know how unappealing it is to
see everything 4 times larger than it should be? *ack*

Oka, here's the answer.  The Trident 9440 is currently unsupported by
Xfree86.  It will not be supported int he next release of Xfree either,
but support is in the works for it.  I don't know how much longer it will
be before it is ready, but work is being done.  The best I can offer you
is that it will run with the VGA16 server in at least 640x480x16.  I have
heard of people who have gotten higher resolutions to work, but for the
most part, everyone is stuck with VGA mode.

It seems to be very strange. Some weeks ago I'd setup Linux from
Slackware CD dated October 1994 (Kernel version 1.1.50, while here are
talks about 1.3.x kernels) and XFree works pretty well using
drivers for Trindent 8900 (800x600x256)

Then you are one of the lucky few that has it working.  I've noticed that
there is a select few that get the right combination of clocks and other
values that they actually get it to work.  Otherwise most people seem to
get the ever popular "interlaced" look.  If you specify the driver as
8900, then you can get the server to come up, but again you get the screen
mentioned above.  Except for a select few, who get lucky and it works.
So, it is possible that you can get it to work, but that doesn't change
the fact that the card is currently unsupported.
