Sound: OPTi 82C931 problems

Post by Anders Melchiorse » Thu, 13 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi, I'm sorry I have to ask a probably frequenty asked question, but I
have been trying to do without for a week now -- without any luck.

I have a sound card with an OPTi 82C931 chip (which is PnP). I have
tried everything I can think of to get it to work. Booting MS-DOS,
softbooting Linux. isapnptools, insmod sound. Many different IRQ
settings. No luck.

When I configure it as a Sound Blaster card and compiles the kernel
appropiately it works most of the time, but only in 8 bit. If I use
Microsoft Sound System (MSS) it also works with 16 bit samples but
unfortunately the sound card stutters and jumps in the sound (that is,
repeats the same buffer a few times and then skips a bit and repeats a
new buffer).

The MSS driver recognises the card as an 82C930 - could this be a
problem?

BTW, the card does not (as far as I can see) have any jumpers or
anything to turn/change stuff.

I am even thinking of purchasing the commercial OSS/Linux but I have no
idea if that would solve my problems. Even though I am kind of desperate
I am not quite ready to spend $20 on a slight chance.

Please help me...

Your stuttering problem sounds like you have the wrong IRQ..

1. Opti 82C931 Sound Card problem

I have an Opti82C931 chipset PnP sound card. I have read the sound how-to
and have tried the following options with no success.

SP Pro Card ( IRA 5 , DMA 0, Port 220 ) ( had to change the configure .c
to get make configure to recognize this, the WSS card and the MAD16 card
(which supports 82C930) but no success. I have tried as both kernel built
in as well as module loadable.

Any help is kindly appreciated.
