Can SCSI terminators go bad?

Post by Tim ODonnel » Sun, 29 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I have a Fireport 40 with a 4.3 gig drive (50 pin) on the narrow chain
and a 2.1 gig drive  (80 pin SCA) on the wide chain. Both wide and
narrow chains are terminated. Today my system all but locked up. When I
tried to restart the system it could not see any of the drives.

The drives were extremely hot and the active terminator on the end of
the wide cable was hot too. I let the system cool down and tried to
restart but it still couldn't see the hard drives. I then removed the
terminator from the wide chain and it booted right up. I reinstalled the
terminator and it couldn ot see the drives. The terminator got very hot
very quickly so I turned everything off and removed it again.

The system is running without the terminator on the wide chain and the
drives are cool. I have had bad terminators from the manufacturer but
have never had one go bad. What's to go bad. I always thought they wre
either good or bad and that was that.

My Question, Can terminators go bad? I will get another one tomorrow,
but if anyone knows for sure I would like to know.

Regards

Can SCSI terminators go bad?

I think they can go bad as there are terminating resistors in there. By
you saying it got hot, that tells me something was wrong, I have never
seen a normally working terminator get much above room temperature.
