Which new motherboard and SCSI Adapter should I buy?

Which new motherboard and SCSI Adapter should I buy?

Post by Todd Douglas » Thu, 02 Apr 1998 04:00:00

I am looking to upgrade my computer to a PII-233.  I am trying to figure out
which mainboard and SCSI adapter to buy.

From the Linux Hardware Compatability list I see that Adaptec 2940 (and 7880
chipset such as is on the Asus P2L97s mainboard) is partially supported.

I also see that the Symbios Logic 53c875 (Asus PCI-SC875, Diamond FirePort
40) is not supported, yet I see reference to people using the Diamond
products?

Any good recommendations?  How about an Asus P2L97 with a DPT SCSI
controller?

Please respond via my Email.

Thank you,
Todd Douglass

I like the A.I.R. P6KDI motherboard, which

  handles 1 or 2 Pentium-II processors.

  has built-in adaptec 7880 ultra/wide SCSI, so you don't need a SCSI
adaptor, and still has 5 PCI slots free, plus 3 ISA slots.

  has on-board IDE & floppy, 2 USB ports, & 2 COM ports.

uses DIMM memories. My machines have 256M of ECC memory installed,
and I still have half the DIMM slots free.

seems very reliable (I haven't seen any crashes in 9 months that I
could attribute to a hardware problem)

Their web page is www.airwebs.com.

I do not know so far how is the state of the aic7xxx driver, but friends
of mine still have problems.

I bought a Asus PCI-SC875 last January.
All I can say is: cheap, fast, stable reliable.

The Symbios 53c875 is fully supported from version 2.0.32 of the kernel.

I am using the BSD version of the 53c875 driver with 2.0.33.

Best regards

The Symbios Logic based SCSI adapters have been supported since kernel
version 2.0.31.  Prior to 2.0.31 the Diamond Fireport and some other boards
which use the 53C875J board did not work because they were not identified
properly by the driver.  You must use the BSD derived NCR53C8xx driver and not
the 53c7,8xx driver.

This would be fast, and allow for upgrade to caching/RAID if you so
choose.

1. Need your opinions for buying a new "Graphic Adapter"

Hey,

I currently own an ATI Rage Fury 32mb. ATI really sucks, they currently
said they wouldn't release the sources for the 3d acceleration.
Accelerated-X ver 5 is the only X-server supporting the
adapter, but accelerated-x is not supported with vmware etc...

So I would like to buy a new graphic adapter but which one.

I would like an adapter which is and will be supported by the xfree86
team.

So which company actually releases it's sources. I need a "FAST" 32mb
graphic adapter with open/gl support for linux. Can you tell me your
experiences and direct me to different solutions.

Thanks a lot
Didier
