LPD doesn't work :-(

Hi all,

First off I am a competent linux user (have been for over two or three years).
So no need to ask me if I have the printer on or have the cable connected or
If I am using the correct port :)

Information:

   100 Mhz Pentium
   24MB Ram
   Networked w/100Mbs

   Debian 2.1r4

Files:

 --------------
  /etc/printcap:
 --------------
  lp|lj|laserjet:\
          :lp=/dev/printer:\
          :sd=/var/spool/lpd/lj:\
          :mx#0:\
          :if=/var/spool/lpd/lj/filter:\
          :sh:
 --------------

Misc Data:

  /dev/printer is a softlink to /dev/par0

When I "cat" something into /dev/printer it prints out fine (except of course
  for the stair-casing)

Yes, the /var/spool/lpd/lj directory *does* exist and I do have the example
fileter perl script that is included with the HOWTO documentation.

  Yes, I have rebooted.

Yes, I did clean out the lock files, it just re-creates them.

# lpr <NameOfFile>
# lpq
no entries.
# lpc
lpc> status
lp:
      queuing is enabled
      printing is enabled
      no entries
      no daemon present
lpc> quit

well, how about: is lpd running (check), does it give any error message
when you (or some script) start(s) it, and why exactly did you reboot?

lpd *is* running and I rebooted to install a hard drive :) LPD does not give any complaints in the system logs when lpd starts.
