Slakware on Gateway 2k solo 9100xl laptop?

Post by BladSn » Wed, 01 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Hi,
The Linux on laptops page didn't look too promising for the Gateway 2000 solo
9100xl, but people seem to be real good at figuring out how to make this system
work on different models. Anyone had success or failure with Slakware
(preferably 3.4) on one of these machines? I have been shopping for a Toshiba
740 cdt because it looks like it loves Linux, but a 9100 popped up and it looks
like a super machine.

Thanx,

I was looking over the specs on this machine, looks like it shouldn't be a
problem.
All it's hardware would appear to be supported.

You will probably have to upgrade the X-server to the latest version (3.3.2)
to get the Trident * 9397 video chipset to work, but this is no big deal.

Looks like a winner to me.

(Maybe *you'll* be the one to write the HOWTO page for this model ;-)

1. X and Gateway Solo 9100XL

I'm planning on buying a laptop in the next month or two, and I've pretty
much decided on the GateWay2000 Solo 9100XL. Before I go ahead with this,
I'd just like to know if anyone has had any experience with this machine and
Linux, or can give me any warnings about potential problems with laptops. I
made sure it doesn't uses a video chipset supported by XFree86 (C&T 65554).
Specifically,

- Are there any issues with the trackpad, or do they work just like PS/2
mice? Can I use "advanced" capabilities like tap-clicking, or will I always
have to use the buttons?

- Are there problems with using external keyboards/mice, or does the
hardware handle this transparently?

- I realize XFree doesn't support video mirroring (image on LCD and external
display), but will it let me use an external display if I've got one
connected?

I hope this is the appropriate newsgroup for these questions. I am mostly
concerned with how well X works; I don't anticipate many other problems
caused by running on a portable.

Thanks,
Jesse Hall
