Screen detection with Debian

Post by Sebi » Mon, 11 Oct 2004 01:15:40

Hello,

I've tried to install the stable version of Debian (Kernel 2.2) on my
laptop which is a compaq nx7000. I made the installation with CDs (the
first two ones proposed by Debian) and the installation was
successful, but I cannot start the X Window Server. I get the error
"no screens found". My graphic card is a ati radeon mobility 9200. Do
you have an idea why I get this error? And how to solve it? Thanke you
in advance,
Sebastien

Why something so *y old?  Debian Stable is so rotted-out it'd*a
buzzard.

Your X is so old that it doesn't have an X server that'll work with that
video card.  Support for this card wasn't added until 4.2.0 or so.
Current XFree86 is 4.3.0, current Xorg is 4.4.0, either one will work,
but you'll have to upgrade your X.  Use Debian Testing instead; you'll
really appreciate having software that was made sometime in the last
year, since KDE's improved by leaps and bounds since KDE 2, it's really
nice to be able to use most USB devices with kerel 2.4, and X 4.n
performs much better than X 3.3.6.  HTH,

1. Bootup hardware detection (debian)

I am involved in a project to install debian a variety of different
computers based on the x86 platform.  We're booting from a floppy and
installing over NFS.  One of the problems is initial hardware setup.
While we could open up every machine and check out all the hardware,
because of the volume it would be much better if we had some kind of
hardware detection utility (including: graphics card, etc).  A second
reason for this is so that people completely new to linux and debian
could just boot from the floppy and have all the detection done for them.

Ideally our floppy:
* detects network card, hard drive, video card
* mounts the NFS server (which we've done)
* installs our specific set of .deb packages. (working on)

Does something like this exist already?  I know the debian 1.44 images
detect a lot of hardware, I was wondering if there was something all on
one, or something that would look to our NFS server for hardware beyong
the network card.

Thanks,
