How to Motherboard Check?

How to Motherboard Check?

Hi Gurus,
I had a huge disaster recently with my athlon machine and
lost a one year ole 60GB Maxtor diamondmax. I don't know what went
wrong where. And now i can't even get into the maxtor to check what is
wrong.
So, the first think i doubted on is my motherboard. I am not
sure if it supports the new ATA technology hard drives. Cause i bought
this motherboard for a cheap deal that i got on some online retailer.
And now there isn't much of tech support for the product from the
manufacturer or anybody.

Can somebody please tell me if there is anyway
software/hardware that i can run on my computer and check what is what
and hence upgrade it only if necessary. I my concern is that i am
thinking of buyin a new hard disk in a week or so. I don't want to
wreck it just because of of some small mess up that i haven't taken
care of.

And also please educate me if there is any chance that
linux will kill hard drives because of some mis-managment or bad
administration or some human or software issues. I run RedHat 7.2 on
my machines. Please inform me with this two issues.

I would really really appreciate any kind of help. Thank
yo uvery much.

Cheers,
Chow.

Well, the obvious method is to put the HDD in a different system and see
if it behaves differently.

1. Motherboards, Motherboards ...

Sorry, my news machine has been off the air for the past few days (for
upgrading) so I've missed bits of this thread.  I did receive some
interesting email, though.

I finally decided to  *do*  something about getting a new motherboard,
and after wading through lots of data and a few kind words of advice,
I decided on ...

.. a Tyan VLB 486DX2/66 with the SIS chipset.   No big deal, except
perhaps for the 1 MByte of CPU cache.  It should be interesting to see
if all that cache helps Linux performance.  I got an ATI VLB Ultra to
go with it.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a known-good VLB SCSI card ??

It's too soon to consider PCI and Pentium, what with the processor and
bus wars breaking out all over.  My spare tower case waits for the
shakeout.    :-)

I won't have the time to get the board installed for another couple of
weeks, but if I encounter difficulties, I'll post them.

Thanks to all who responded,

Chuck.
