Linux does not recognize Aztech CDA668-011 IDE CDROM

Post by Jin Yan » Fri, 26 Jan 1996 04:00:00

I could not get Linux to recognize my Aztech CDA668-011 IDE CD-ROM drive (6X)
when installing Slackware 3.0. I tried the kernel with generic IDE support
and the kernel with Aztech CD-ROM support. Both did not work. My system
has a EIDE harddisk connected to the first primary IDE channel (of the on
board controller). The CD-ROM is connected the second primary IDE channel
(the second cable). Is it true that Linux only recognizes IDE devices
connected to the first primary and slave channel (the first cable)?
Can someone give me some pointers. Thanks.

Make sure you have set the jumper(s) correctly for the drive. I think
that most of them are set up to be "slave" drive. If it is the only
drive on the secondary channel, it should be set as "master" or "only"
drive.

Additionally you will probably need to either specify at the boot prompt
  linux hdc=cdrom
or in lilo.conf
  append="hdc=cdrom"
Those examples apply if cdrom is master drive on secondary controller.

Above all, the best advice is to look in
/usr/src/linux/drivers/block/README.ide. There are a number of cautions
in there.

At the Lilo prompt for your installation disk, type:    ramdisk hdc=cdrom

After you install, and boot up with the new kernel...you will need to either pass similar instructions
through lilo every time you boot or upgrade to the 3.1.20 kernel.....which will automatically find your
cd rom...when you type this information at the LILO prompt, it is better to have a cd in the
drive...otherwise, the system may hang....rgd, don

PS...please use an ide cdrom boot/root install combo...

Kernel 1.3.20 has broken IDE code.
DO NOT USE IT IF YOU HAVE AN ATAPI CDROM.
IF you insist on using an experimental kernel,
use the latest, which is AT LEAST 1.3.57.

Is there anyone who can help me with the same problem.
I have tried to use
ramdisk aztec=0x376,0x79 and some more like this without
any success att all, could someone tell me if there is a way
to get linux to find my cd-rom.

I have the cd-rom on the secondary controller set as master.

1. Aztech CDA668-01I CDROM problem.

I am trying to install Slackware 3.0 from a CDROM, but Linux can't find
my CDROM at Setup(or on boot). I am using the ATAPI driver for the boot disk
and it looks like the CDROM is plugged into its own EIDE slot on the
motherboard. It may be a problem with jumpers not set correctly for
slave/master etc. mode. I don't have the schema for setting jumpers on the
CDROM. Anyone have this information, or other suggestions? Thanks.
