old P60 and memory upgrade: what type of modules?

Post by Andreas K. Huette » Tue, 18 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Dear all,

I want to upgrade a Pentium 60 box bought 1994 from now 16MB to 64MB
main memory. Exact specs see below.

- Which types of memory modules do I need / can I use? Are so-called
"fast-page" modules correct?

- The motherboard has "two memory banks, each with two sockets". So if
I order from some shop, I need to order for full usage 4 modules as
offered?

- Do I need special tools for exchanging the memory modules?
- Is there somewhere on the net something like a howto?

Thanks a lot in advance for your advice.

Motherboard PCI58PV (PCI and VESA local bus)
  Manufacturer: TMC?
Processor: Intel Pentium 60MHz
Chipset: OPTi 82C596 82C597 82C822
BIOS: Award 4.50G (as displayed on boot)

quotations from the mainbord manual:
---
Main memory:
Up to 128MB of on board main memory
Two memory banks
Four 36-bit SIMM sockets for 256k*36, 1M*36 or 4M*36 modules
The SIMM sockets also support dual density modules: 512k*36, 2M*36 or
8M*36
---
The PCI58PV has two(2) memory banks for up to 128MB of main memory.
Each memory banks of the PCI58PV consists of two(2) 36-bit SIMM
(Single In-Line Memory Module) sockets that can accept 256k*36, 1M*36
or 4M*36 modules.
The SIMM sockets can also accomodate dual density modules such as
512k*36, 2M*36 or 8M*36 SIMMS. ...
[then follows the list of valid module combinations for certain
amounts of total memory]

Your card will most likely be able to handle 72-pin SIMMS with or
without parity fast-page, or maybe, if you see something about this in
the manual or in the BIOS at bootup, also EDO. EDO is cheaper, but you
should make sure that you buy the same kind of memory that you already
have if you intend to use your old memory also.

You could order four 16 MB simms and replace your old ones or you could
order two 32 MB simms (probably cheaper) and keep them together with
your old ones to get a total of 80 MB or maybe 72 MB depending on the
size of your old simms.

Not except for opening the box, use your hands for changing simms. There
are two knobs to bend out to the sides before pulling simm forward when
removing memory. To insert memory, just tilt the simm in place. My
english is not very good, maybe someone else will be able to explain in
a better way :-)

Not that I know of, maybe you will find more info in your manual for the
motherboard.
