estimate when accelerated ATI Mach64 or Diamond Stealth 64?

Post by Nicolas Noise » Fri, 20 Jan 1995 19:09:07

i am interested in both ( either ) cards for X video ( VLB ),
and am wondering when they might be supported in
accelerated modes. i may buy a different card if the
date is more than 1-2 months away. i would also like to know if
any other cards ( besides Mach64 ) have the COM4 conflict problem

thanks!

all IBM 8514A  compatible cards/chips (S3 too) suffer from this problem.

the real source of this problem is the address decoder for your COM4 uart,
which does only 10 instead of 16 address lines and thus clashes with the
extended 8514 registers (COM4 starts at 0x2e8,
8514 uses e.g. 0x92e8, 0xa2e8, 0xb2e8 etc).

I'm using many S3 cards with two different COM3/COM3 cards with no problems,
both serial cards do full address decoding!

so a possible fix is just buying a new serial card!

estimate when accelerated ATI Mach64 or Diamond Stealth 64?

Post by Colin Howar » Wed, 25 Jan 1995 00:43:44

arrrgh!!! just when I thought it was safe to decide on a graphics card ...
Looking at the hardware compatibility FAQ I thought it was safe to go for one
of the following:

Miro Crystal 20SV PCI
Diamond Stealth 64 VRAM PCI
ELSA Winner 2000 PRO PCI
#9 GXE64 PRO PCI

As far as I know all are S3 964 VRAM cards. Then there are the ATI Mach 64,
and SPEA Mercury cards.

Do any of these actually work in a sort of plug and play mode? ie. without
having to ftp files from the vendor or something?

Thanks in advance,

colin.

I have tried both MACH64 and Stealth DRAM64 cards and cannot get past the
installation. I do not have a COM3 or COM4 port.  Has anyone gotten X-
Windows to work with either card?
I must decide soon and would appreciate help.

1. Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM or ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (Mach 64)?

I'm looking into getting a Micron P120PCI Millennia Plus system for
running Linux and XFree86. The Micron upgrade choices for video cards
are:

 - Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM    - 2MB or 4MB
 - ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (Mach 64) - 2MB or 4MB

Which is better supported in XFree86?

Is there any significant speed difference between these two cards for
XFree86?

I've heard that some cards run faster w/4MB than 2MB due to memory
interleaving or double wide bus access.  Do either of these two cards
have this property or is the only difference for these cards the
number of colors supported at higher resolutions?

Thanks,
Doug
