probs with Adaptec 2940

Post by Uli Joerge » Mon, 01 Jan 1996 04:00:00

Hi,
I have just upgraded to an Elitegroupe TS54P PCI board with Pentioum 90.
All my old ISA cards work fine (even the Adaptec 1541).
After I plugged in the Adaptec 2940 fun was over.
The old Fujitsu SCSI-I and the new Connor CFP2105S are recognized bye
the Adaptec BIOS. I even can format th disks.
But neither DOS nor Linux will boot.

Does anybody know, what I'm doing wrong here? I've tried several BIOS
configurations but nothing changes.

Bye
Uli

What version of the kernel are you using?

If you are using 1.3.3x or earlier and the Adaptec card is fairly
new ( ie. with the 7881 ( correct me if I'm wrong :) ) chip, Linux
won't find the adapter. Upgrade the kernel to 1.3.52 and you should
be up and running ( Unless you also try to run a 3c59x-card, but
that is a whole different story... )

I'm running a pentium PCI box under linux with aha 2940 SCSI controller and
3c590 ethernet adapter since 1.3.3x kernels without any problem. Now I'm
running 1.3.56 kernel. Yes, with old version of 3c59x driver there was need to
hack a little bit the driver, but there was nothing so hard.
Here it is the /proc/pci listing:

PCI devices found:

1. Probs with Adaptec 2940 ???

I've found some random errors in some of my tar-files.
Using gnutar under FreeBSD produces random errors while
extracting the archive.
The same procedure under DOS works fine.

I've verified these errors with creating several archives
under DOS and FreeBSD, so it seems to be no termination
error.

I just do that to make some errors:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
tar -cf test.tar foo/             [creating works without errors]
tar -vtf test.tar
[filenames]
....
[xyz filename]
tar: read error on test.tar : Input/output error
[same error as above]
...
tar: Too many errors, quitting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

xconsole says something like this:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

sd0(ahc0:0:0): MEDIUM ERROR info:57de1d asc:11,0 Unrecovered read error
, retries:4
sd0(ahc0:0:0): MEDIUM ERROR info:57de1d asc:11,0 Unrecovered read error
, retries:3
sd0(ahc0:0:0): MEDIUM ERROR info:57de1d asc:11,0 Unrecovered read error
, retries:2
sd0(ahc0:0:0): MEDIUM ERROR info:57de1d asc:11,0 Unrecovered read error
, retries:1
sd0(ahc0:0:0): MEDIUM ERROR info:57de1d asc:11,0 Unrecovered read error
, FAILURE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't explain these errors, because the source file is readable.

Any hints?

Thanks for reply.
