Exabyte EXB-4200 DAT: Linux Hangs :-(

Post by Ian Coop » Sat, 26 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Hi

I have an Exabyte EXB-4200 DAT, and AHA2940 controller. When trying to
write to tape, after writing a couple of Megs, Linux hangs, and I have
to hit the reset button.

This tape drive works perfectly under BSDI and AIX, so there is nothing
wrong with the tape. Looking at some other posts, I am beginning to
suspect that the Linux SCSI tape driver is broken. Has anyone else had
a similar experience, or is there anyone using an EXB-4200 successfully?

Regards,

I use an EXB-4200 with an AHA-1742A SCSI Host Adaptor.  I have used it
successfully for the last two years, with a couple of caveats:

*   I had to explicitly configure the HA to not initiate synchronous
communication (and I also set it to communicate at 3.3 Mbyte/s
maximum).  The 4200 is not specified for syncronous, the 4200C is.

If I didn't force asynchronous operation, I found that the 4200
would operate, but at some random point, either reading or writing,
a whole slew of I/O errors would start, ending with the tape drive
locking up, although the rest of the devices on the SCSI HA (two
hard disks) would continue to work properly.

*   Recently, I have seen errors at the end of reading back a tape:

        Aug 24 11:29:06 linux kernel: st0: Error 28000002. extra data \
not valid Current error st0: sense key Not Ready

These are puzzling but not fatal.  I haven't (yet) gone through the
source code to work out what's happening.

Exabyte EXB-4200 DAT: Linux Hangs :-(

I have the same problems on my linuxPC
Kernel 1.2.6, Wangdat 3100 (DDS1) and AH1542CF.
On heavy tar or mt commands the systems hangs up.

Somebody told me, to use a newer kernel (1.2.13 or so)
I'll se it.

1. Support for SCSI DAT(EXB-4200/other) Tape Drives

I am thinking of buying a EXB-4200 (or EXB-4200C) for my LINUX box.
So I decided to ask a few questions of I may.

a) How do you feel about the EXB-4200 (or EXB-4200C) support ?
b) I have a UltraStor 34F SCSI controller that I will daisy-chain from
are there any known problems in this configurations.
c) Is there support for EXB-4200C ?
d) Is there support for EXB-8200 ?
e) why would one buy 8200 (usually more expensive) compare to 4200 ?
f) Is there support for any other DAT tape drives ?
g) Is the driver for EXB-4200 fairly mature ?

Since the drive cost about $800 - $900 I want to make sure that I could
use it effectively. Thanks in advance.

My Configuration [486/66 99p13 GCC2.4.5 4.4.4 VLB UltraStor34F]

Sincerely.

Sohail
