RIVA 128 or TNT chipsets under X

Post by Mark Hanki » Sat, 14 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I have looked at XIg's, Metrolink, and Suse's sites and none of them support
ANY cards using the RIVA 128 chipset.  Are there plans by any freeware or
commercial groups to make Xservers for these in the near future?

Thanks in advance for any accurate information.

I've been using the XFree86 Server with my Elsa Victory Erazor (Riva 128) for
quite a while now. It works without complaints.

You might want to check http://www.xfree86.org/3.3.2/NV11.html#1

Hope this helps.

XFree86 supports the Riva 128 chipset. I'm using it now. No idea if it
works with the TNT, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

I'm using a Diamond Viper 330 - which is using the Riva128 drivers
available from www.rivarave.com

Works fine.

It seems everybody that has responded is using Riva 128 cards by
manufacturers who stayed fairly close to the Nvidia design spec.  I have
heard that Canopus actually has modified the design of their boards to an
extent that people couldn't use the alpha openGL drivers for the Wintel
platform released by Nvidia.  Canopus had to do this.

Can anyone confirm or deny this at least in regards to the Wintel platform?
If this is true, there MAY(?) be some issues with using the SVGA server from
Xfree (have heard that SuSe has one, or they shared the driver design with
them).  May have to ask Canopus about this as I don't see too many people
claiming use of them.

Also, as a last question, does the newest SVGA server utilize acceleration
on (generic) Riva 128 cards?

Thank you to all the responses I have received, they have really help to shed
light on the subject.

Somewhere in the change logs XFree86 claims that acceleration is being used
for Riva 128. I believe it's true. Moving windows feels fast enough.
