Better yet, has anyone had success in getting a CDU55E to work at all?
I'd like to know what you had to do if you did.

says...

I recently had Linux installed(by a friend) on my system which has a sony
cdu55e drive. Since, I am new to Linux, I can only tell you this much. Once
the OS was installed my friend mounted the cd-rom as another IDE drive.
Only, considerations, the drive is on the same controller as the hard disk.
So far it works fine.

the CDU55E is an ATAPI right?....just enable the ATAPI switch in the kernel config
file.  All of the 1.2.1? kernels should do.
For mounting the drive use the last+1 hd-device.  That is...if u have 2 AT-Drives,
you'd write  mount /dev/hdc /cdrom -tiso9660

If you have a kernel which has support for IDE CD-ROM compiled in it
should work. I recommend you to compile your own kernel.

Yes.

I've installed it and it works. If you have your CD-ROM on the second
controller you have to create the right devices (at least slackware
includes wrong devices). To do this, execute MAKEDEV.ide1 which is in
<path to your kernel source>/drivers/block/.

Ciao,
  Ronald.
