How to lock the bad sectors on the hard disk without reformatting the hard disk !!??

Hello, dear Internet friends !!

Anyone can tell me if there is any utility to lock the bad sectors for
the ext2fs under Linux without re-initiating the harddisk.

I used "fsck /dev/hdaX" to fix the filesystem but it could not lock
the physical bad-sectors. When I wrote something to hit the bad
sector, my Linux Panic could get Kernel Panic due to accessing
some bad sectors. "fsck" or "exfsck" cannot fix them and it can
only recover the damaged file system only (NOT the bad sectors).
Can you tell me how to do ?

Thanks for your creat help !!!

Best Regards. Louie

1. Help for IDE Hard Disk --bad sectors?

My new Western Digital 540 Mb IDE hard drive has begun giving these error
messages to the kernel in the last week:

Jun 18 10:24:30 n5xcr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jun 18 10:24:30 n5xcr kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, CHS=903/14/54, sector=419255
Jun 18 10:24:31 n5xcr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
Jun 18 10:24:31 n5xcr kernel: hda: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, CHS=903/14/54, sector=419255
Jun 18 10:24:31 n5xcr kernel: hda: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }

This error is occuring in my /news subdirectories while nnmaster is doing
his thing. I found the corrupt files on my disk when I moved /news to a
newly created partition/filesystem.

I have e2fsck'd the disk, but it doesn't find any problems. My kernel is
1.1.59. My question is, does Linux find and keep track of failing sectors on
an IDE drive? I'm aware of this done in hardware as in SCSI drives, but what
hope have I except to do the old 'backup-reformat-reinstall'? Does Linux
have a command to 'fix' my disk?
