Linux Hardware Encode avi to mpeg

Post by p.. » Wed, 18 May 2005 21:25:16

Hi!

Using dvgrab (great tool) I have ripped 20 mini-dv tapes to numerous
avi files on my hard drive.  I now want to encode them to mpeg2 (their
ultimate destination will be DVD).

I want to do this encoding as quickly as possible and guess that it'd
take a few days, possibly a couple of weeks, to encode 300Gb of video
on my pc.

So, is it possible to use the hardware encoder in a Hauppauge PVR 350
to reduce this timescale?

Cheers

This is possible but i wouldn't run the risk opf damaging your hard
dirve in the process of it and possibly losing all the files

Interesting. How can you damage a harddisk by using hardware encoding
instead of software encoding? Stressing the disk? Buggy drivers?

I may buy a PVR card in the near future, so I am very interested in this
problem.

I think it is the right ng. You may just have to wait a bit before the
right people sees your post. I'm not one of these. Sorry.

I can't imagine there being any such risks.  Don't believe everything
you read on the Usenet.

I don't. That is why I ask.

A very nice man at Hauppauge has given me the answer.

Sadly the answer is 'No' :-(

The Hauppauge PVR 350 card (and its friends) will only encode a 'real'
video signal (RF, Composite video or S-Video).

So, you cannot use a Hauppauge PVR 350 card's mpeg encoder to convert
.avi files to .mpeg2
