I don't think that plextor drive is a cd-rw.

CDRW Buy Decision - HP 8100I vs Plextor PX-R412CI

Hi No-spam

I have a 8100I running under NT4.0 SP4 and linux *.36 it works fine.
However I  will qualifiy that by saying that I have not used it as a writer
under Linux.

Also I have noticed the following issues under NT.    The drive performs
nicely under NT but the supplied software does have a problem with NT
Explorer.    It will crash Explorer from time to time when used with the
CDROM set to emulate a disk drive.    The unfortunate thing is I like using
it in this mode.    Thisa is a new piece of hardware for me and I really
havent tried many of the other features this drive is Capable of.

Under both operating systems the drive is fast! :)   By the way your price
is very good a hundered dollars less that my local cost a month ago.

Dave

Check the Sony Spressa crx 100; same guts as the HP, somewhat different
software, a bit less expensive, I paid $310 at buycomp.com

I've been thinking about getting one of those after reading a couple of
reviews on them.  You can't always trust the reviewers though so I like to
get comments from users.  What do you think of it so far?

Not one bit of difference.

Don't know about Be, but my 8100i works great with xcdroast under linux as
well as with Adaptec ECDC under Win98.

Looks like like the Plexor unit is not a RW drive.  The numbers for the HP
drive are Read(24x), Write(4x), and Re-Write(2x).

I would recommend the Plextor. Plextor has a 12x read and a 4x write/rewrite speed. The HP has a
24x read, 4x write, and 2x rewrite. The major difference is that the Plextor is SCSI. This is
incredibly faster than the EIDE, considering you have other SCSI drives. The best configuration is
a SCSI CD-ROM and the SCSI Plextor drive. However, the programs will copy the CD info to your hard
drive if you don't have another CD-ROM drive. Yes, the mirror is a back up. You can boot from it,
providing your motherboard BIOS supports this. The best bet is to try to make a boot disk on a
floppy, and then copy other drivers to the hard drive. Then recopy from the CD-ROM you backed up
to. I have an HP SCSI drive, and with another CD-ROM it will copy right from the original to the
recordable CD. This prevents the slowdown of copying from CD to disk, back to CD. This is also the
recommended config. Hope this helps!

Hello John,

According to documentation the Plextor is just a writer... not a
rewriter... the rest is accurate though... if you allready use scsi stay
with it... communicates a bit better....

I use the HP8100i though... bought it second hand for only $100,- and
since i don't have anything scsi.. ;-)

Walther
