Take a look at bug #417299 in patch 2777: 6.2 all platform kernel
rollup:
Bug #417299 : IP22 only: system hangs while performing
network-intensive operations. The mouse cursor doesn't
move, no crash dump is produced, the power button
doesn't work; a ``paperclip reset'' is required.
That patch solved the problem for me.
