Mediad Fails After IP Address Change

Mediad Fails After IP Address Change

Post by Neil Rothwel » Tue, 25 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi All,

I have an O2 on a standalone network - running IRIX 6.5.6m

After changing it's IP address to one in the private address range -
192.168.0.2 with netmask 255.255.255.0 - mediad now fails to monitor
the internal CDROM and external DAT. They work fine manually I just
don't get any desktop icons or items listed in removable media
manager.

Also at login there is a delay before the desktop comes up.

I have the correct entry in /etc/hosts and files DNS NIS in the hosts
line of nsswitch.conf

All other networking is fine.

Mediad worked fine prior to changing the IP address.

Any help appreciated.

I'm having similar problems.  Can anyone help?

I seem to have narrowed this down to a hostname resolution problem.

I've a default gateway on another host for internet access via a
dial-up NAT server (Sygate) which I seldom use. If this is enabled and
on-line when the O2 boots then mediad works fine.

I think nsd/mediad is still looking for my old IP address by querrying
my ISPs nameserver, this fails but then oddly mediad works.

A nsd cache bug maybe?

(I did all changes via the GUI System Manager)

Mediad Fails After IP Address Change

Post by Neil Rothwel » Wed, 26 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi All,

Thanks to all who helped me on this, especially Peter Ilieve & Jerry
Jorgenson, problem now solved.

Performing a tcpdump -s256 whilst loging-in reveals:

22:19:32.540235 rotherso2.1040 > 158.152.1.58.domain: 1+ A? localhost.
(27)
22:19:32.606001 rotherso2.1040 > 158.152.1.58.domain: 2+ PTR?
58.1.152.158.in-addr.arpa. (43)

It's trying resolve localhost!

Checking /etc/hosts I find I mistakenly removed the 127.0.0.1 line
when I edited my IP addresses ;-(

Add back and mediad and desktop login now work fine.

Cheers

1. changing ip address in IRIX 5.3?

Hi all,

Silly question, but how do you change the ip address on an IRIX 5.3
machine without using the X admin tools? I've never had to do it before
and I've been searching through /etc all day trying to find some
reference, but to no avail.

Thanks!
Mike.

PS: Could respondants cc to me, my news feed is terrible.
