Hi there, we use IRIS Indigo and...
well, here is the REAL problem: someone put a password on root
THAT one left the dept (was kicked out) but left us this way:
Some stuff works, other doesn't.
- do I have to install the whole system?
- can I do something to prevent data loss?
- can I do what??
ANY help very welcomed!!!!

Load the miniroot, and edit the password file with
        sh
        ed /root/etc/passwd
and delete the passwd file field for root

The miniroot is what comes up with you stick an installation
CD in the drive and choose 'install software' from the PROM.

If you are running IRIX 4.0.x, it is simpler to do this:
        boot or reset system
        stop in PROM by pressing ESC
        got to maint mode (5)
        type:
                single
This brings the system up in single user mode, then do:
        ed /etc/passwd
and again, delete the password field for root.
