Thanks for responses from people reading the newsgroup about WAP
happy WBMP image converters that might run on IRIX.
There is a draft CCP14 based page on using WAP (The Mobile Phone "Wireless
Application Protocol") for Scientific and Crystallographic applications.
http://www.ccp14.ac.uk/solution/wap/
----
The simple (public) examples given in the page is a WAP page on
the SRS Synchrotron Beam Status:
Text Only: http://wap.dl.ac.uk
Graphics and Text: http://wap2.dl.ac.uk
(You will need a WAP enabled Mobile Phone or WAP
Emulator to view the above pages:
e.g,
Wapalizer Javascript: http://www.gelon.net
WINWAP for Windows: http://www.slobtrot.com/winwap/
----
Also, as getting a WBMP converter going for SGI IRIX was
quite a nightmare, a friend has written a small
GPL'd BMP to WBMP converter that knows about BIG_ENDIAN and
LITTLE_ENDIAN computers:
SABWBMP for Windows and UNIX:
http://www.droidwarez.com/sabwbmp/
It also has some colour filtering in there to take
care of converting images that may have a varying
colour background.
(Also, the ImageMagic on freeware.sgi.com is not current
enough if you want to use this for WBMP conversion.
Go for the newest version at:
ftp://ftp.wizards.dupont.com/pub/ImageMagick/ImageMagick.html
----
Links to some of the pitfalls and problems of WAP are also given.
e.g.,
"The WAP Trap: An Expos of the Wireless Application Protocol
http://www.freeprotocols.org/wapTrap/one/main.html
http://www.ccp14.ac.uk/solution/wap/wap_trap.html
and:
W* Effect Considered Harmful
http://www.ics.uci.edu/~rohit/IEEE-L7-WAP.html
Corrections/suggestions for the page appreciated. As well
as links to other Crystallographic/Scientific WAP enabled
pages.
Lachlan.
