When I need to access a remote tape device for a remote backup I must
open the guest account by removing the lock (*) from the second field
of the guest entry in /etc/passwd on the remote machine (the one with
the tape drive physically attached). I also give this guest account a
/bin/csh shell instead of its /bin/false shell, but I'm not sure if
that is necessary. As soon as the connection is made I revert to the
original configuration for guest (lock the passwd with * and give the
account /bin/false for a shell) so as to not leave an password-less
account around for too long.
Perhaps Lord Olson can give a better method which doesn't open the
guest account to the world like this. Maybe there needs to be an
.rhosts in the guest account or something like that. I never found
any documentation on this, so the above method was suggested to me
by the hotline folks.
Hope this helps.
