INDY: Maximum Memory?

INDY: Maximum Memory?

Post by Tony Clar » Wed, 05 Jun 1996 04:00:00

Hi,

What is the largest amount of memory I can put into an Indy?  I know the
literature says 256Mb, but is it possible to put 64Mb SIMMS in the
machines to go to 512Mb?

Curious...

I belive it is a hardware adressing limitation, the Indy probally can take a
single bank of 64-meg simms, but does not have enough adress bits to accually use
more than 256mbytes. That's my understanding, FWIW.

1. Maximum Impact R4400/250 >> Maximum Impact R10000/195

Hi,

I have got a SGI graphics application based on GL
(ELF 32-bit MSB mips-2 dynamic executable MIPS - version 1).
I have made a test which visualizes a geometry in line  drawing
mode, and in shaded surface mode.

I am VERY SUPRISED when I run my program  on some platforms about the
shaded polygons .
The performance numbers are reported in seconds. Here you are the
results :

        Platforms                              : lines     shaded polygons
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
 O2                       6.3 - R5000SC 180Mhz : 100.29 s   114.91 s
 Indigo2 Solid   Impact - 6.2 - R10000 195Mhz  :  35.85 s    49.41 s
 Indigo2 Maximum Impact - 6.2 - R10000 195Mhz  :  25.40 s    49.05 s
 Indigo2 Maximum Impact - 5.3 - R4400  250Mhz  :  24.01 s    36.02 s
 Indigo2 Hight   Impact - 5.3 - R4400  250Mhz  :  36.03 s    36.1  s
 Indigo2 Extreme        - 5.3 - R4400  200Mhz  :  29.8  s    56.64 s

Actually, using a Maximum Impact board, the 6.2/R10000 platform  is
LOWER than a  5.3/R4400 platform : 49s / 36s !!!

On 6.2/R10000, the Solid Impact and the Maximum Impact boards are
identical (49 s)!!!
We can see the same thing with the 5.3/R44000 between  a Maximum
Impact and   Hight impact boards (36 s) !!

Could anyone explain me why I get this loss of performance on
R10000/6.2 platforms ?
Would there be a problem on IRIX 6.2 or R10000 board using GL
applications ?

I cannot currently upgrade my applucation under OpenGL. What is the best
thing I must do ?

Thanks in advance.
