I wanted to know how to switch video modes on the console to 50 or 60
lines.
Can anyone help me?

You might want to do something like:  stty rows 50

If that is indeed the case then you could put it in your
shell initialization routines.

Look around any Sunsite for the programme "SVGATextMode".
It'll do anything the hardware is capable of - I run my console
at 100x37 with it, for example.

Ah, just looked it up.
http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/utils/console/SVGATextMode-1.6-src.t...

It can go up to 160x60 on the proper equipment if I understand rightly.

I usually just have "vga=extended" in my lilo.conf.

Also if you're using lilo check out the lilo.conf man page and do a
search on vga=ask.

If I had a neat and nifty saying, it would go here.

Get SVGATextMode. *Much* better way of increasing rows/columns. I'm
currently running my 15" monitor at 100x37 chars and loving it. 80x25
looks plain ugly, 80x50 is too squashed.

SVGATextMode has an abundance of different modes, and you can roll
your own as well. Installs in a few minutes, and makes a huge
difference in using the console.

This program is highly under-rated. Get it.
