Need the benefit of the advice of someone who knows what they are doing.....

Hi folks,

I'm trying to get my head around Unix via the installation and use of
Linux..... It's coming, but a bit slowly..... I would like to build a
new kernel (currently running Infomagic Slackware), and have obtained
the Linux-1.2.13.tar.gz file from the net.... It inflates fine and after
reading and following the README fairly religeously, I get an error
following 'make zImage' apparently from the linker saying that it
cannot find kbsys.o (or something like that).....

Can anyone shed any light on why?? I don't seem to find *any* .o
files in the ..../kernel directory and find finds none in the whole
tree....

1. Need someone to take a look at a Problem I am having

I have been fighting with Linux for around 24 hours now trying to
establish a PPP connection.  My provider assigns me a new IP each time
I log in.  I must hit a carriage return then it will give me Username>
then I enter it in and hit enter, then it asks for Password> I enter
that, and then it usually works "in Windows 95 that is"  Well I have
tried to setup the script for Linux and it seems to work, except until
the end.

Here is the error I keep getting:

Dec  7 17:51:12 ns pppd[295]: Connected...
Dec  7 17:51:12 ns chat[296]:  ^M -- got it
Dec  7 17:51:13 ns kernel: ppp: channel ppp0 mtu = 1500, mru = 1500
Dec  7 17:51:13 ns kernel: ppp: channel ppp0 open
Dec  7 17:51:13 ns pppd[295]: set kernel debugging level to 0
Dec  7 17:51:13 ns pppd[295]: Using interface ppp0
Dec  7 17:51:13 ns pppd[295]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/cua1
Dec  7 17:51:43 ns kernel: ppp_ioctl: set debug level 2, netpacket 0
Dec  7 17:51:43 ns kernel: ppp: channel ppp0 going down for IP
packets!
Dec  7 17:51:43 ns kernel: ppp: channel ppp0 closing.
Dec  7 17:51:43 ns pppd[295]: Connection terminated.
Dec  7 17:51:43 ns pppd[295]: set kernel debugging level to 2
Dec  7 17:51:43 ns pppd[295]: Exit.

Here is my script:

are at least part of it....

/usr/sbin/pppd connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /root/.pppscript'
defaultroute 38400  /dev/modem 0.0.0.0:0.0.0.0 &

I have also tried:

/usr/sbin/pppd -vj connect '/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /root/.pppscript'
defaultroute 38400 /dev/modem 0.0.0.0:0.0.0.0 &

If anyone could help I would really appreciate it... I am just really
getting frustrated.

If possible, could you please respond by email.  I check it more
often.

Thanks
