Problems with efax and USR Sportster/Motorola Lifestyle modems

Post by Scott Bre » Sat, 17 Aug 1996 04:00:00

I posted this to the qfax mailing list earlier today, but haven't seen any
activity other than mine, so just in case...

I am new to efax and the mailing list so this may have been asked.  I have
checked the faq and resources/modems in the archive and don't see an answer.

I have an external USRobotics Sportster 14.4 fax/modem (class 1) attached to
serial port 2 of my Linux system (which is running Slackware 3.0 with kernel
1.2.13).  I have a mouse on port 1 and no getty running on either serial
port.  I installed efax 0.7a.

I can successfully send a document using the "fax send xxx-xxxx file"
command, but have to turn the modem off and back on to send another one.
The log of the first call shows nothing that looks like an error.  When I
issue the command to send another fax the modem goes off hook for a second
(I can hear the dial tone) then goes back on hook before any dialing
occures, then the process hangs until the time-out set with the S7 parameter
expires.

I have tried several different reset strings, including -z+FCLASS=0 both
before and after -zZ and have tried including delays with -ozzz to no effect.

If I attach directly to the modem with cu after the first fax it does appear
to have been reset and is back in class 0 mode.

I have the output of "fax test" and session logs available if they would be
of use.

I tried a different modem (a Motorola Lifestyle 28.8 with class 1) and found
it does not exhibit the problem with the second call.  It has it's own
problem completing a call.  The logs for it show 'padding to 12 bytes/scan
line' after the fax file is opened (which did not happen with the USR) and
then at the end of the transmission things break down and the receiving fax
comes up with an error that says 'restart' or 'resend' or something to that
effect.

One one occasion with the Motorola efax actually sent a single page twice in
the same session, with the resend error happening at the end of the second
attempt. The log for that is below.  Most of the Motorola attempts were only
a single attempt but with the same failure.  (Disregard the remote ID and
number in the header - I have been playing musical phone lines :-))

Does anyone have a clue about either one of these?  I'm guessing I'll need
to give up on class 1 and get a class 2 modem, but it will be awhile and I
would really like to get one of these working, preferably the Sportster.

Thanks

1. FAXing with efax and the USR Sportster 28.8 internal modem

I just downloaded and compiled efax but notice it does a lot of error
reporting when I attempt to fax with my USR 28.8 Sportster.  This seems
to be the best solution for the type of faxing I do.  I did notice that
the man pages do not say specifically that the USR sportster is
supported.  Are there other fax programs perhaps X based I should
consider?  I tried hylafax but gave up.  I would like one that I could
install on my standalone system and use as needed to fax various text and
graphic documents.  I do not have a network other than my ppp connection
to the internet.  I found one that was developed by the person who also
did PerfectBackup but his web page seems down.  Could someone tell me the
name of the program and whether its offered at some mirror or other ftp site?

Thanks.
