Has anybody modified Linux to use 32 bit uids?  I'm using RedHat-6.2.

There is a patch for 2.3.x. Don't know if this got incorporated or not.
You might check deja or linux-kernel archives, if you don't get a better
answer.

Yes.

www.google.com, use it.  Search on 'linux 32 bit uids',
and guess what you get? :-)

1. 32-bit UIDs

Is there any way to convince Linux to use 32-bit UIDs?  Someone else has my
copy of W. R. Stevens, so I can't look up what the "standard" is for User
IDs.  It seems that all Unixes that I've looked at so far (Slowaris, Linux,
IRIX, etc....) use 16 (or in some cases signed 15-)-bit UIDs.

I have a timesharing system that I'd like to be able to host more than 64K
users on.  Is there a elegant (Hell, I'll even take kludgy) solution to
this?  I've thought about having random users share UIDs, but that'd just be
confusing (and dangerous).

I've heard rumours that Digital UNIX can support >64K users, but they may
just be marketroids' hype.

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.
