I used to run "minicom" to manually get PPP connection with my ISP. Now
the ISP switched to PAP for authendication. I have read ppp-howto, and it
seems that I have to use "chat". Is there any way that I still can use
minicom for PPP connection with PAP?

PAP happens during the PPP negotiation (LCP), *after* chat or minicom
has been used to get the serial link up. I makes no absoultely no
difference if the stage before LCP is done manually (through a
terminal emulator like minicom) or through chat.
