Why bother with PPP?

Can anyone tell me the advantages of PPP over SLIP? (I use CSLIP right
now, but can easily switch to PPP if it offers any benifits). I hear PPP
autodetects certain options (nameserver IP adress?)  is this true?

No, it's not true. If you you have a network of your own, behind that PPP
-link, then it's true. Not without. And nameserver IP you have to write
down into /etc/resolv.conf even then.

Why bother with PPP?

There are a number of items that PPP will negotiate for, IP addresses,
masks, etc. For me, the biggest stumbling block was getting my chat script
just right. From OS/2, setting up PPP and getting it working has always
been pretty easy.

Due to dynamic addressing and the exploding interest in the Internet, I'd
imagine that you will see a migration to PPP. Just my $.02.

i use PPP because i need to escape certain characters to get my network
connect to run through a telnet connection. SLIP/CSLIP doesn't seem to offer
this capability. (anyway i didn't see it..)

Why bother with PPP?

It is my uderstanding the PPP is a natively supported protocol
and SLIP is a work around to networking.

PPP should allways deliver better performance

Seconded. As are all those "help with ppp" messages - I mean what do they think
c.o.s.networking is for!
