PLIP trouble / would need help !

Hi there..

I set up plip many times before, so no time I found myself faced with such
problem...  What I have is an old notebook without CD-ROM, so I told my
friend ones again.. no problem linux can do data transfers without it.

So I booted up mulinux on one side, having debian on the other.

ping on the plip device on laptop side works , also on my workstation.

But pinging each other doesn't just work!

I use kernel 2.4.18, mulinux has version 13r2... works just fine.

I know , that the cable is a good one, I used it weeks before.

The transfer mode on laptop side (bios setup) can only be switched from
"bidirectional" to "unidirectional"... might it be, that "bidirectional" is
not working?

Or what kind of transfer modes has modern computers commonly... plip can
handle both, I think.. in the documentation I found mode 1 and 0 , which
stands right for the directional modes I mentioned before.

Can anybody help me ?

Is there any alternative, anyway ?

you need to make sure that the parallel port is using an interupt
it wont work without it (you will need to load it as a module)

Hi:)

Jepp, I knew that... but is there anything else to tink about ?

1. please help: PLIP trouble (I did read the PLIP and NET3 HOWTOs)

Hello,

I am trying to set up a PLIP connection.
I recompiled the kernel, installed it, and rebooted.
Upon reboot I get the classic error:

SIOCADDRT: network unreachable

... and ...

upon boot time the line:

SIOCADDRT: device not supported

my /usr/src/linux/.config has the lines:

CONFIG_MODULES=y
CONFIG_KERNELD=y
CONFIG_IPX=y

...

CONFIG_PLIP=m
CONFIG_PRINTER=m

on both machines

unfortunately on startup kerneld incorporates support for APX

which at the moment I don't want, and does it again each time I:

ifconfig plip1 one pointopoint two

I am afraid I will have to disable this dumb feature. I followed the instructions

very carefully but included more modules like PPP and SLIP as well as IPX because I need them.

I also have PRINTER support on both machines as a module (asa shown above) so that is not a problem.

lsmod shows ipx and plip. Even if rmmod ipx the bloody deamon brings it back up each time I run ifconfig.

So, the questions and answers in the PLIP FAQ don't seem to cope with the problem I am experiencing.

In the future I will load my modules with insmod (and or read the kerneld-mini-HOWTO in addition to all

other HOWTOS).

And BTW, I got to ping one host successfully with a bit of hacking, but how I do not know, I just messed with

the files. In any case I could not "rsh" either way.

One thing I would like to see answered in the FAQ section of the PLIP HOWTO: what do I do to the

entries

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain

on both machines? Do I leave them there?

Do I delete them?

Do I have to rename "localhost" to "one" or "two"

Can these entries coexist with others for the same host:

eg.

cat /etc/hosts

     127.0.0.1   one  one.net.broken
     200.0.0.1   one  one.net.broken

???

********************************************************************************

... continued ...

OK, I recompiled the kernel on both the PC and the laptop without support for

kerneld and load my modules with "insmod /lib/modules/2.0.35/net/plip.o"

and "insmod /lib/modules/2.0.32/net/plip.o" on the laptop.

I still get the "SIO*" messages at boot time ?

I also get the message on the laptop when i give the route command that says

that the network is unreachable.

I am starting to think that the laptop does not have built in PLIP support

though the bios gives me the option of ECP, EPP, or bi-directional.

Do I have to use different IRQs for printer support and plip support maybe?

I wish the PLIP HOWTO said something about configuring BIOS settings and about

iwhat the different BIOS modes are and what they mean.

TIA,

Neil Zanella
