My machine: P166+mmx, 32mb ram, 4gb HD with Win95 and Win NT 4.0 and
redhat5.1 co-existed in different partitions.

I issued "sndconfig" within a xterm inside X Window, The program
detects the SB 16 pnp card sets it up with no error message, but when
it launch ModProbe to test out, it gets a message states: An error was
encountered running the ModProbe program."  I tried different IRQ
settings, all ends with the same message.

2nd, When I try to mount /dev/cdrom from File Systerm Manager, the
following error is returned:  Can't find /dev/hdb in /etc/mtab or
/etc/fstab.

3nd, When my machine boots, it halts at "Sendmail" for about 3-5 mins
before it goes to next step.  Obviously there isn't any mail system on
the machine right now because it is a standalone.  How can take this
mail thing out and speed up booting?

last one, Is my Zoom 56k PCI FaxModem a Windmodem that Linux can't use
to connect me to my local isp?

Experts help me out please. thanks.

I'm a clueless newbie, so take that into consideration.

I just installed a SB 16 pnp, but I am using 5.2. Anyway, when I used
sndconfig, both in and out of X Windows, the machine would lock up after
detecting the card. I disabled PnP in the bios, and it is working fine,
I'm listening to "Transcendental Highway" by Colin Hay, as we speak.

I mount my CD Rom using the command line. "mount /dev/cdrom /d", where d
is a directory I set up for the cd rom.

Winmodems don't work with Linux. I have a Jaton "The Communicator II".
It works fine and is reasonably priced.

I'm a newbie, but I hope I helped.

The sndcfg with RH5.2 automatically chooses the settings.
Like the other guy says you could try disabling PNP in your bios if its
enabled. Or you could try installing the newer sndcfg.

try one or all of the following:

(a)     mount /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom
(b)     add a line for your CDROM in /etc/fstab

/dev/hdb        /mnt/cdrom              iso9660 noauto,ro       0 0

(c)     install autofs so you can just go "cd /misc/cd" to access your
CDROM drive without having to mount

From X, start up tksysv, and change the settings so sendmail doesn't
start at boot. BTW, I think there is probably something wrong with your
HOSTNAME setup or something. I had this problem some time back.
If you read email on linux, you will probably want to have sendmail starting.

There's a fair chance that it will not work ( if it cost less than $80- ,
it probably won't work. )

I got the Jaton Communicator for about $40 from http://www.site4shop.com
(I'm not connect to them in anyway). All the others I found were much
more expensive, like you say.

http://www.o2.net/~gromitke/winmodem.html has a lot of good info on the
subject.

Oh, you missed the first two steps,

1) 12lb sledghammer modification to winmodem
2) Encase dead winmodem in lucite.
