Is it possible for me to install Linux on one machine and then
transfer the HD to another older machine?

It depends on the machines.  If they've got the same types of peripherals
(disks, network cards, etc.), then it will probably work.

.... the problem, obviously, is whether any of the h/w is supported
found on the destination machine. you'll have to make a list of the
h/w and ensure it is supported

Yes.  I've done that.  (Assuming the 'older machine' supports the hard
drive; i.e., the '8.4 GB hurdle' and the '32 GB hurdle', if encountered.)

I've also installed on one machine, and transfered the 'backup' to another
machine. (when my laptop refused to install from CD).  Installed on a
different machine, then booted laptop and other machine with rescue
diskette, and transfered the root filesystem from other machine to laptop
over a network connection. (In this case, more 'touch-up' was necessary:
to account for differing partitioning--/etc/fstab, reconfiguring X, etc.)

1. mtx - Inquiry command Failed - help

Hi,

I just installed mtx on Solaris 8 to control my L280 autoloader.
When I enter the command 'mtx -f /dev/rmt/0 status' I get the following
message:

mtx: Request Sense: Long Report=yes
mtx: Request Sense: Valid Residual=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error Code=0 (Unknown?!)
mtx: Request Sense: Sense Key=No Sense
mtx: Request Sense: FileMark=no
mtx: Request Sense: EOM=no
mtx: Request Sense: ILI=no
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Code = 00
mtx: Request Sense: Additional Sense Qualifier = 00
mtx: Request Sense: BPV=no
mtx: Request Sense: Error in CDB=no
mtx: Request Sense: SKSV=no
INQUIRY command Failed

Can someone tell me why the mtx command is returning this message.

Executing 'mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status' returns:

Quantum DLT7000 tape drive:
   sense key(0x0)= No Additional Sense   residual= 0   retries= 0
   file no= 0   block no= 0

Thanks in advance,
Leo
