Lexmark Printers (5700)

Post by Phil Humphery » Tue, 16 Feb 1999 04:00:00

I picked up a Lexmark 5700 printer the other day and am really hoping
someone can tell me that there is linux support for it.  It'll do PCL,
won't it?  I didn't see much about Lexmark printers in the ghost
script docs.

Thoughts?

I don't know about the 5700 but the 1020 and the 2040 will work with
the HP deskjet 500C using 300x300 res. ( at least I got my dads to
work that way)

just a thought

My understanding is that the Lexmark 5700 is a host based printer -- i.e.,
the rasterization is done by your CPU and just a bitmap is sent to the
printer.  Sort of like a dot matrix printer in graphics mode.  You can't
really call it a "winprinter" because it does have OS/2 drivers but,
AFAIK, there aren't any Linux drivers.

There has recently been an announcement in c.o.l.a for support for
Lexmark 7000, could also work  with other Lexmark printers such as the
5700. Unfortunately, I forgot to bookmark the URL :-(

LEXMARK 7000 PRINTER DRIVER FOR LINUX (AND OTHER OPEN SOURCE SYSTEMS)
*********************************************************************

Hi folks!

This is my first release of Lexmark 7000 driver for Linux. It took so
much
time, because Lexmark does NOT provide protocol specification for
third
party. They consider it "copyrighted". So, this work is completely
based on
disassembling printing files (using driver Windows and Print to File
capability in programs). It does mean, that this program comes WITHOUT
ANY
WARRANTY! Use it on your own risk only!

Current features:
- -----------------

* Black/White printing 600x300 dpi only (600dpi horizontal, 300dpi
vertical)
* work as filter PBM -> printer, e. g. easy integration with
Ghost-Script

As I stated above, this driver is *pre-pre-pre-pre ALPHA* version. Use
it on
your own risk. I'll gladly appreciate bug reports and bug fixes
concerning
this driver. I also hope, that Lexmark will change his "OSS deny"
policy
soon.

The most recent version of this driver should be available on:

I hope you will enjoy this "underground" release of Lexmark 7000
printer driver

1. lexmark 5700 printer drivers

Does anyone know anything about printer drivers and more importantly
anything on this printer.
The company said tough luck -- this works only in Windoze so I am trying to
find some kind of alternate/compatible drivers or some way to build one.
Thanks,
Alex
