"Network is unreachable" Problem solved!

Doah me!! It was a mere configuration problem.  Many thanks to Mr.Woobin Lee,
Mr. Tom Laird, and Mr. Javier Henderson in pointing out the right cause.
I've finally been able to see something other than "Network is unreachable"
after the past one weeks.  Thanks again.

: I was wondering what exactly the configuration problem was in your case. I too
: am getting network unreachable when we try to ping our HP9000 from one of
: our Linux X-boxes...all of which are connected to the lan via the Klever hub.
: Any info you could provide would be helpful.

In my case, the sound card (PAS) seemed to be conflicting with the
ethernet card (Novell NE2000, an ISA card).  I compiled the kernel once with
both sound support and ethernet card support.  I kept getting the message
"Network is unreacable" until someone advised me to recompile the kernel
without sound support.  Everything worked fine after that, but there is no
sound support :-(  Also, you may want to make sure that you do:

make mrproper; make config; make dep; make clean; make zlilo

where you may change "make zlilo" to "make zImage" as needed.

Hope this helps.

Also, if you are on a direct internet link and if your /var/adm/messages
file doesn't show something similar to the following two lines, then the OS
wasn't able to detect your ethernet card.

Jul 12 23:53:31 Jupiter kernel: NE*000 ethercard probe at 0x360: 00 40 33
                                26 be 85
Jul 12 23:53:31 Jupiter kernel: eth0: NE2000 found at 0x360, using IRQ 12.

The best thing would be to disable the support for all the external
devices except your ethernet card while doing `make config,' and
recompile the kernel.  If this doesn't work then reconfigure your
ethernet card for another IRQ by changing the jumpers or by using a
DOS-based program (as in my case) and reboot.

Good luck!

1. SMAIL problems: "lock failed", and "network is unreachable."

Well, I got smail working so that it went through and delivered
all of the mail that wasn't delivered the last two months. Now I can't
send new mail to anyone. Here's a brief segment of what was in
/usr/spool/smail/logfile:

10/12/94 12:42:04: [m0qv6ke-0004mgC] received
|            from: mark
|         program: sendmail

|            size: 631 bytes

10/12/94 12:45:56: pid 253: new config files, exec(/usr/lib/sendmail)
10/12/94 12:45:56: pid 6860: smail daemon started
10/12/94 13:11:28: open_spool: /var/spool/smail/input/0qnI1X-0004o5C: lock failed: File exists
10/12/94 13:11:29: open_spool: /var/spool/smail/input/0qnI1X-0004o5C: lock failed: File exists
10/12/94 13:11:29: open_spool: /var/spool/smail/input/0qoews-0004oHC: lock failed: File exists
10/12/94 13:30:57: open_spool: /var/spool/smail/input/0qpm1L-0004oQC: lock failed: File exists
10/12/94 13:30:58: open_spool: /var/spool/smail/input/0qv6ke-0004mgC: lock failed: File exists

I don't know if that help anyone or not. I'm running linux
1.1.45, and smail 3.1.28. My system is currently not connected to the
internet, though that shouldn't matter because I'm just trying to send
mail to myself.

Anyone have any clues, or can point me into a direction to look?
If you need more information, email me.

        Much thanks.

        -Mark
