Installing RedHat Alpha 4.1 on an AlphaStation 600

Hi,

I'm having trouble in installing RedHAt Alpha 4.1 on a

I configured everything to have the "Boot Linux" tag.
On my MILO disk, I put linload.exe version 1.3 and a milo
file from the milo/alcor directory since a AlphaStation 600
is an Alcor based computer (from RedHat Installation Guide).
When I boot the system, I have The following message:

        Linux Loader V1.3

        Copyright(C) 1994,1995 Digital Equipment Corporation

        System Partition is OSLOADPARTITION=multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)
        Load File Name is OSLOADFILENAME=\milo
        Load Path is multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)\milo
        OSLOADOPTIONS=nodebug

        Opening file multi(0)disk(0)fdisk(0)\milo ...
Loading the file at 0x80000000 ...

        Getting firmware parameters ...

        ...Memory size is 0x8000000 bytes

Swapping to PALcode at 0x0 ...

And the boot process of MILO hangs here !!!

I'm new to Alpha Linux and any help would be very
appreciated.

Thanks a lot !!!

Claude Lefrancois.

Claude,
I had this same problem with a Noname board.  Basically, your version
of linload and the MILO image you used are incompatible (there are
significant changes between the versions of linload).  I don't know if
it matters which version of linload/MILO you use, but you must get
them from the same place (i.e. - if you're using Digital's server,
download from the same directory).
HTH,
Jon

Unfortunately, the AlphaStation 500 and 600 systems cannot be booted
from ARC console.  You can load MILO, and you might even get it to
start, but you cannot boot Linux from this configuration.  You need to
use SRM console and "aboot" instead.

Check out David Mosberger-Tang's "aboot" goodies at ftp.azstarnet.com
in /pub/linux/axp/aboot.  For some reason their web server will not
allow http:// or ftp:// access; you must use the ftp utility directly.

The kernel flavor you want for your system is "alcor"; this is the name
of the chipset used in these machines.  Unfortunately, the "alcor.gz"
kernel on the Red Hat CD will *not* work; you'll need to build a new
one (all of the kernels in their "kernels" directory are bootable via
MILO but not via aboot.  You need to build a kernel using "make boot"
and fish the result out of the "arch/alpha/boot" subdirectory).
