I dont think I understand what you mean. According to the man page for
shutdown, all it does is calling init. so if i run init 6, it wont have
anything to do with "shutdown" any more. also, shutdown will do all sorts
of stuff, like unmounting filesystems, killing processes, and halting the
computer. but both init 6 and shutdown -r now (which is basically one and
the same thing, since shutdown only calls init) will have the computer
stop at please stand by while rebooting the system. this only happens
on one particular machine. i have several others running the same
distribution and kernel version which are fine.
when you look into the reboot code in
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/kernel/process.c it is actually mentioned what i
think probably is my problem:
/* The following code and data reboots the machine by switching to real
mode and jumping to the BIOS reset entry point, as if the CPU has
really been reset. The previous version asked the keyboard
controller to pulse the CPU reset line, which is more thorough, but
doesn't work with at least one type of 486 motherboard. It is easy
to stop this code working; hence the copious comments. */
this is a 486 with a newer mainboard with a pci bus which are quite rare,
i think (havent seen many of those anyway).
so i think ive identified the problem. only where do i take it from
here?
thanks to yall
