I'm using Slackware 8.0, with kernel 2.4.17.

My /var/log/syslog is full of

Jan 24 20:54:22 alpha modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-14

Is this familiar to anybody?  Know how to fix this?

thanks!

char-major-14 is assigned to the sound device, as documented in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt .  Most people want sound on
their machines; I can only guess that you don't want it or don't have a
sound card in the machine.  To stifle these messages once and fro all,
add the following line to /etc/modules.conf :

alias char-major-14 off

and run depmod -a .  HTH,

Thanks for the help, and the pointer to devices.txt.

I found the relevant area in the doc, but I must admit my
knowledge on these details are scarce.  I will have to find a
devices primer or something.

The fix works, and you're correct I have no sound card (yet).

thanks again,

1. Can't locate module char-major-14

kerneld cannot find your sound-driver module (char major 14 is the sound
card driver). Something is trying to access your sound card without
the sound.o module being available in /lib/modules/2.0.24/misc/sound.o
Compile and install the sound driver module, or disable sound support
entirely by adding 'alias char-major-14 off' to /etc/conf.modules.
Or don't run the command that tries to do sound.

Your pppd program is out of date. You need ppp 2.2.0 or later for the
2.0 kernels. And check that you are picking up the right pppd binary -
it usually lives in /usr/sbin, but some distributions have it elsewhere.
