HELP: Diamond Stealth 64 w/ X... Wrapped Column in Display! ACK!

Post by Lyle Fo » Tue, 31 Oct 1995 04:00:00

Hi, I have a Diamond Stealth 64 Video 2MB PCI.. and after setting up
X on the Slackware Linux 3.0.0 ELF release, everything seems to work
fine, except it seems my X screen has shifted 5-10 pixels to the left,
and the first few columns of pixels wrap around to the other side
of the screen!  It's bugging me.. and I can't seem to fix it =(
I've tried different Vert and Horz refresh rates.. with no avail.

Perhaps could someone w/ the Diamond Stealth 64 as well send me their
XConfig?

BTW, I have a Nokia 447X Monitor..

Thanks!

Lyle

On a side note, what does ELF in Slackware ELF mean? *bonk*

(1. X doesn't support the Diamond Stealth as far as i know but this might
    be wrong...)

2. ELF-HOWTO: you can find it e.g. on sunsite : /docs/HOWTO/ELF-HOWTO

First it is www.diamondmm.com NOT www.diamond.com.  Second, I found
absolutely no reference to diamond video cards/linux on any of their
pages.  If you want us to be up to date you really should provide is with
the directories where the can be found, and the names of the archive files.

Yep,

They changed the name, sorry about that.  First of all, the Lycos search
engine will usually find this type of info for you. Secondly, go to
www.diamondmm.com then page down to you find "Information Needed for
Programming in XFree86" and click on it.  Then find your card in the
list.

The file in question is www.diamondmm.com/linux.html

It is disguised as "Information on programming Diamond Cards in XFree86"
(or something like that) on the diamond home page. You can also find it
through a web search.

The document doesn't answer the question at the top of the thread though
(at least as the thread reads from my location). Why does the display
wrap the righthand pixels? (I've got the same problem, and I'm dying to
know)

That problem has been fixed in XFree 3.1.2.  I experienced the
pixel stripe in XFree 3.1.1. Note, that the problem only occured in
1280x1024 non-interlaced modes.  Even using 'option "diamond"' did not
relieve the pixel stripe annoyance.

If you don't want to upgrade to 3.1.2, you could always create your
own mode lines.  I created 1280x962 and 1192x896 modes which did not
have the annoying white pixel bar down the right edge.  I also liked
those modes better than 1280x1024 since they use the same aspect ratio
I am use to for all other graphics modes.

See ya,
-Robert

I came in on this discussion late but it seems to me that the problem
is that the timing is too optimistic on the retrace time of the monitor.
During each horizontal line there is time alloted for the active scan
and the remaining time is the retrace time that allows the beam to
return to the start. This time is limited by things like the yoke and
flyback inductances. Any attempt to shorten the retrace time too much
will distort the visible display.

Hope this helps.
