strange shell problems with Redhat linux

Hi,

I installed Redhat 4.0 and and few packages from Readhat 4.1.  The first
time, there was no problem.  After restarting the computer and loggin on
as a regular user, I found the following problems with the shell:

If I start a csh or tcsh session, I get an error message such as:

tcsh: Permission denied
tcsh: Trying to start from /home/<username>

In the mean while the above error message string also gets appended to my
PATH variable, and wreaks havoc with my .cshrc and .login while.  If I
reset the PATH and MANPATH variables (by saying setenv PATH;  setenv
MANPATH) and then manually source the .cshrc and .login scripts, then
everything is fine.  But the same problem occurs each time I start a new
shell.

With the bash shell, I see the following problems.  The computer fails to
execute the .profile script even though I start a login shell.  If I try
to say something like . .profile, it complans:

/bin/.: Permission denied.

Could someone tell me what's going on, and how I can fix it.  Looks like
the tcsh problem is related to file permissions, but I don't know which
file.  I do have read and execute permission to /bin/tcsh, and other
relevant files and directories I can think of.  I greatly appreciate your
help in solving this problem.
