You should be able to compile the kernel with the compiler
you have but it may be an idea to upgrade to ELF anyway -
just because several things (including the latest Netscape)
are only being provided in ELF binaries.

After upgrading to ELF, you will be left with a system that is
capable of running both ELF and a.out binaries. Provided you do
the upgrade correctly, everything should work fine as is. To
avoid problems, carefully read the ELF-HOWTO which gives step-by-step
instructions on how to properly upgrade.
