ATI Rage 3D Pro & DVD compatiblity question

Post by scn » Sun, 02 Aug 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I've got a PII with an ATI All-in-wonder-pro (8MB, AGP, Rage 3D chipset)
video card.

I've been looking through the various linux documents out there, but I am
still confused.

1.    Will this card work with a linux setup?
2.    If so, what will its limitations be?  Will I be able to work in a
1280x1024x24bpp with no  problems?

Next question.  I have a DVD-II rom drive.  Will this work in linux?  Will
linux be able to recognize it as a standard CD rom?  Does linux have any DVD
player software yet?

I haven't used UNIX for about 3 years, but would like to get back into that
environment; however, I don't quite know which linux implementation to use.
Is Redhat the easiest version for relative newbie's?  Are there other
versions that I should investigate?

One final question with regards to all the linux/UNIX terminology, is there
a URL somewhere that will answer many basic questions?

Thanks for the help!!!

Scott

+ I've got a PII with an ATI All-in-wonder-pro (8MB, AGP, Rage 3D chipset)

+ 1.    Will this card work with a linux setup?

More than likely, yes. I have a similiar setup - chipset and AGP, at least,
and it works fine.

+ 2.    If so, what will its limitations be?  Will I be able to work in a
+ 1280x1024x24bpp with no  problems?

I think so.

+ Next question.  I have a DVD-II rom drive.  Will this work in linux?  Will

As a CD-ROM, yes. As a DVD, no. As far as I've read, anyway.

+ Is Redhat the easiest version for relative newbie's?  Are there other
+ versions that I should investigate?

I've been installing RedHat, and its been pretty easy. I chose RH simply
because two other people at work run it.

Thanks for the reply.

Still not clear on my answer however.  To install Linux, can I simply use
Redhat version 5.1 and it will have all the drivers required for operation?

Thanks again,

Scott

If you have XFree86 3.3.2 in your distribution, yes it will work with
your video card. If you have an earlier version, it will not work.

I have seen many people asking for help with this video card and
none of the answers I have seen worked for me.  I just recently upgraded
to a Pentium Pro 180 and an ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV w/8MB SGRAM.  Some more
pertinent details:
        CPU:  Intel Pentium Pro 180
        MB:  Intel Venus 440FX
Video:  ATI 3D Pro Turbo PC2TV w/8MB SGRAM
Kernel:  Linux 2.0.30 i486 (APM features are enabled; does that
                make a difference?)
        XF86:  3.3.1
        GCC:  2.7.2.3
        LibC:  5.4.38
Monitor:  KFC (generic; no KF Chicken jokes please) 15"
I have included the output from startx (error3.txt) and my config file
(XF86Config).  When I start X windows (with 'startx') all I get is a blank
screen.  I know the monitor is still getting a signal because it doesn't
power itself down.  The screen is just black.  If you need any more
details, do not hesitate to ask.  I need help, PLEASE!!!
