Login Error -- getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory

Greetings,

Today, I started noticing a weird error message when I login to my
Linux box.

shell-init: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access
parent directories: No such file or directory

It seems like all users get this message if they login.  Same goes for
root.

Everything still seems to work alright.  I can see my home directory.
I can see the parent directory.  What gives?

Anyone have any ideas what is causing this?  Anyone seen this before?

Thanks.

1. debian upgrade problem: getcwd: cannot access parent directories

Hi,

I upgrade my debian to 2.0 beta almost perfectly, except that X doesn't
work.  X keeps dying after startx or after xdm login. (Xdm shows login
screen, but x dies after login and goes back to login screen.)

------
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access pa
rent directories
shell-init: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent direct
ories
job-working-directory: could not get current directory: getcwd: cannot access pa
rent directories
------

However, I can run `X :1 &', and then `fvwm -display localhost:1&' to
work on X.

Anyone has idea what might cause the problem?  Thank you.
